Calla Egos, Mallorca, Spain

Calla Egos, Spain        14th-22nd April 2016

The area is generally quiet but there are quite a few places to eat and plenty of souvenir shops about. There are a couple of nightclubs but they along with a number of shops were closed (due to open start of May). There aren't any arcades around, however there are a few areas with pool tables to use. Beaches are small and man made but lovely. The one we visited near the hotel however had lots of Jelly Fish, so we avoided going in the sea. The marina is nearby and there are excursions on offer, however at the time of year these were limited.

Hotel Club Marthas

The hotel - Club Marthas was beautiful with lots of greenery and exotic flowers. Perfect for both couples and families. The two pools were beautiful and clean although they where freezing cold. The indoor pool was lovely but crowded in windy conditions. The place in general was clean and the reception staff were very friendly and welcoming.
Food via buffet was available although we didn't try it so can't really comment. The pizzeria was beautiful! No understatement; prices were under $10 and was plenty for two. They also served a couple of other dishes such as hamburgers etc and had plenty of childrens options. Deserts formed in majority ice creams with soft, fizzy and alcoholic drinks being offered. If you like your cocktails I would highly recommend Martha's. Although the food is great the service is super slow, it's much easier to order at the bar and then go there to pay when you're done.
Most of the entertainment at night revolved around the children and was very basic but that may be down to the time of year. Day time entertainment offered rifle shooting, aerobics, volleyball, archery, lawn bowls and there was a full time table on offer for children.
The room was great and boasted a lovely bathroom with shower and bath, kitchenette with two hobbs, a microwave, sink, fridge and freezer, living area with sofas the size of beds, bedroom with two double beds and large wardrobe, balcony complete with your own sun loungers and table and chairs. It was clean, air con/heater worked perfectly and the bedding and towels were changed every other day. Keeping the room key with your phone or wallet kept deactivating the key card which was annoying so best keep it apart.
Their tours lady wasn't very excitable about excursions but was knowledgeable and there is a fair bit on offer. You can hire the place's own bicycles which was good fun and great as it was such a quiet time in the year. There's also pool tables for use, costing 1 euro and you can hire a paddle set to play table tennis. They also have their own tennis court where you can hire rackets to play. There are massage chairs in reception costing two euros each for ten minutes and were quite relaxing.

Food & Drink

There are ample places to eat around Calla Egos and the surrounding areas. Meals at the most expensive cost 16 euro per person but if you're on a budget you can get by for 10 euros per person. There's also a supermarket in the area where you can purchase food for self-catering. We cooked at the hotel whilst there and saved a bunch of money.

Western Steakhouse - Calla Egos (Wifi = westernwifi)
The staff here where super friendly and attentive. Food was lovely; we ordered chicken curry with chips and steak. They had specials one of which was unlimited ribs but we missed out by going on a different day. The chicken curry was similar to chip shop curry but they made it to the spice you like. The steak was juicy and salad average. Very generous portions. They specialized in steak but also sold tapas, pizza, few fish dishes.
Amount Paid - 27.40 euro

Napolis - Calla Egos (Wifi = napoli2016)
Napolis was a pizzeria selling affordable pizzas. They were fairly thin but tasted lovely, although a little powdery on the crusts. We shared a pizza between the two of us as it was an ample size.
Amount Paid - 11.80 euro

Nevada - Calla Egos (Wifi = nevada2015)
Nevada served mostly pasta and pizza dishes but also served pasta. We opted for the spicy chicken madras curry. Although nice and well portioned it was by far not spicy.
Amount Paid - 27 euro

Pirate - Calla D'or
Although pricey, the food here was delicious!! The size of the plates was ample and the taste was unreal. We had the wok noodles and burger and fries. Both tasted astronomical and was worth paying a little more for. They sold a range of items including pizza and tapas.
Amount Paid - 31 euro

Excursions

Sinou & Formentor
At first we thought we were paying 35.50 euros per person to take a trip to the large Wednesday market in Sinou - the woman at the hotel wasn't very enthusiastic or informative on selling it to us. Turns out there was a lot more to it. We took the bus to Sinou where the tour guide gave us information on nearby landmarks. We then spent two hours or so at the market which sold a number of items and food. We were then taken to a town where we were given two hours to roam. The area was quaint with plenty of restaurants, a marina with man made beach and some souvenir shops. Having roamed around we were taken on a boat trip across the beautiful waters to Formentor. There we were again given free time to relax and take in the beautiful views and scenery before heading back on the bus to Puerta Pollensa - a famous rocky landscape set in a national park. Having taken photographs we then headed back on the bus towards calla egos. Around 3/4 of an hour out we stopped at a ceramics/liquor shop where we were allowed to taste test 35 varied shot tasters at no charge.
Amount Paid - 35.50 Euro pp

Bike Hire (www.bicillevant.com)
We hired a bike for the day and had lots of fun. The weather was murky with no sun in sight so it was a great day to ride around the local areas. There was also a free app available which gave varied cycling routes in the area. Road users must be used to cyclists as they were very generous and considerate.
Amount Paid - 7 Euro pp

Santanyi Museum (Museu Parroqual De Santanyi)
If you're religious this is a must when in Santanyi. You can light a candle in the church and look around some of the ancient relics.
Amount Paid - 2 Euro pp

Others
There were plenty of other excursions on offer which we didn't take up. These included pirate shows, aqua park, theme park, trip to Palma, scuba diving, boat rides, cave tours and other market trips. There was also some mini golf courses however these were closed during our trip. Companies include Skualo, excursions a cabrera, Roig etc.

Transport

Express Train (Mini Trenet)
The express train runs around the local area and makes for a cute ride. It costs 2 euro for a one way ride and 4 euro for a ride along the route. It passes by the forte, the marina and nearby calla egos.

Buses
Buses were far and few as they don't run during off periods. There was one running however to Santanyi where there was a local market on every Wednesday and Saturday. A one way to Santanyi was fairly cheap at 1 euro 85 cents. This bus stopped at the following stops: Calonge, Cala Gran, Cala Ferrera, Cala d'Or, Cala Egos, Portopetro, a'Alqueria Blanca, Santanyi, Campos, Llucmajor, Poligon Son Noguera, s'Arenal, Palma.

Taxis
Although we never went in a taxi there were loads queued up ready to take fares. These stopped in the main street where everything is centrally located.

Rent a car/moped
You could rent a car or moped at set prices from a number of companies in the area. We didn't hire one however the average price for hiring a car for one day was 68 euro and around 78 for two days, for every day above this there was an added fee of approx 39 euro per day.

Weather

The first few days was beautiful with the sun shining until late. The last few were although sunny quite windy. We struggled to sunbathe with the winds at their highest. It rained one night but other than that skies were clear.
